Young Goodman Brown is about a man who is faithful to his wife, beliefs, and community. But in this story he takes a journey through the forest. He is hestitant to take this trip because he knows that it is evil. During this trip he meets a man who wants to take him to where he needs to be, but Goodman Brown is very hesitant to go. It turns out that he is taking him to witches ceremony, where they want Goodman Brown and his wife to join. On the way there Goodman Brown realizes that some people whom he had total confidence in are involved in this and he is truly disappointed. Towards the end of the story, when he refuses to be involved in this witches circle, he goes back home and he is starts thinking that it was all a dream. The story says that he became a stern, sad, meditative, distrustful, and desperate man. He becomes old and and he dies, and it says that no one puts a hopeful verse on his tombstone.
Young Goodman Brown was a somewhat more difficult read than Siddhartha. I did enjoy it though. Brown leaves his wife "Faith" to go on a quest or journey. It is a journey that he has to take. The reason he has to take it is not clear but it is obvious he must go. As he continues on his journey he meets another traveler who walks carrying a staff. As soon as the other traveler was introduced it was obvious to me that he was the devil or some other representative of evil. As the staff is described it reminded me of the serpent in the Garden of Eden. I felt that the serpent has some control over Brown. As he continues I think that the incident he had was possibly a dream but I think that the dream/vision was guided by evil to fulfill a purpose. The purpose was to break Brown's spirit, which it does. Once Brown returns home he has lost his "Faith" and does not trust anyone or anything again.
This story was harder to read as it was hard to understand everything going on in the story. Young Goodman Brown has a wife named Faith who had pink ribbons. He decides to go into the woods on a different journey. After coming back from it he doesn't trust anymore and almost has a chip on his shoulder. Lesson in life is things aren't always what they seem. Because he chose this path in life things are different and going that route wasn't what it was all chalked up to be. This was not one of my favorites like Siddartha was because I had such a hard time following the story.
The story, Young Goodman Brown, was a very interesting tale. Goodman Brown was leaving his wife to leave into the forest and it was very confusing at first why he does this. The man he meets alongside his journey almost instantaneously reminds me of the devil. His similar appearance gave me the idea that it was a part of Goodman Brown that is hidden from the rest of the village. As they talked, the stranger seemed to be an entity more evil and powerfully involved in not only his life but everyone's lives.
He departs the man and gets lost in the woods to find a meeting of people kind of like a cult. Goodman Brown sees Faith and many other people he had trusted in attending the meeting. Goodman Brown returns home in the morning being very suspicious towards everyone in town. In reality, what he experienced has never actually happened, and it ruined his life because of it. It would have been much better to have never went on this trip of doubt and sin and instead put his trust in Faith and religion.
