As time passes and Bernard is enjoying his new found place with the "upper class" he seems to lose his true self. He has all the things he has always wanted but at what cost. He is no longer true to himself and even though he appears happier it was obvious to me that sooner or later he was going to crash. When the crash came though his old friend Helmholtz was there still, even though Bernard had basically been ignoring him. Bernard seems to start to understand that he had been acting poorly but was jealous of the relationship between Helmholtz and John. As the story progresses I think that things will start to unravel in the "Brave New World" due to bringing John into it. I think that Lenina and her attitudes and thoughts for John will surface and there will be more issues due to that situation.
In this part of the story, John has become very popular and Bernard has taken advantage of that. Bernard has parties and invites the most important people. He also is getting around with the ladies. Even though he is popular, people still talk behind his back. At one of his parties, John refuses to make an appearance and that becomes the end of Bernard's popularity.
It also seems like Lenina is starting to realize that she has feelings for John. John does too, but he refuses to act upon them. I'm kind of hoping that she will act upon her feelings and somehow change. I'm hoping that she will finally put aside all her conditioning and just let herself go to her emotions.
In this part we also see the friendship of John and Hemholtz flourish. John reads to Hemholtz some Shakespeare and Hemholtz finds it good but ridiculous at the same time. Bernard becomes jealous of their friendship.
The story resumes at a house they are resting after they used a helicopter to get back. Lenina takes a lot of soma to get over the things she saw. Bernard, on the other hand, took time to think about what he would do. With time to spare, he talked to many officials and the World Controller to bring back Linda and John for study purposes.
Bernard was extremely lucky. The director was ashamed and disgraced by the event that Bernard was not sent to Iceland. Linda let herself succumb to soma addiction as Bernard used John to get everything he wants.
Ultimately, John has enough of civilized life and Bernard suffers from it. Back in reality, Bernard goes back to hanging out with old friend, Hemholtz, and let him talk to John. Bernard should have saw this coming, but hopefully he will learn something from this.
