Siddhartha has had enough of living like the childlike people and he realizes that he needs to leave. So he abandons all his possessions and leaves. In his journey, he comes once again to the river and he is about to drown himself when the word OM comes to mind. That makes him stop his suicide attempt but then he passes out of exhaustion.
When he wakes up, a monk is sitting by him and it turns out to be Govinda. Govinda tells Siddhartha that he is on a journey and Siddhartha tells Govinda that he is on one too. After they say farewell, Siddhartha realizes that he is different again. He feels like he been born again and he gives credit to the river. So Siddhartha decides to stay near the river and to find his friend the ferryman.
When he finds the Ferryman, Siddhartha tells him that he wants to be his apprentice. The Ferryman named Vasudeva then takes Siddhartha to his hut and he listens to Siddhartha tell him his life story. Siddhartha admires Vasudeva's patience and he tells him that he will learn to be patient as well. So the years pass and Siddhartha learns to be patient, to be a ferryman, and to listen to the river.
Kamala, after Siddhartha left gave all her possessions to the Gotama. When she heard that Buddha was ill she decided to go, with Siddhartha's son, to see him before he died. When they were near the river, she stopped because her whinny son insisted, and while they were resting a black snake bit her. Vasudeva heard her son's screams and he went and took Kamala and her son to his hut. Siddhartha instantly recognized Kamala. Before Kamala died she told Siddhartha that the boy was his son.
After Kamala's death, Siddhartha tried to win his son over with kindness and patience. But his son was spoiled and used to commanding people, so he was very disrespectful to Siddhartha. Siddhartha refused to let him go, even after Vasudeva insisted that he take him back to the city. This was tormenting Siddhartha. Finally one day, Siddhartha the little boy ran away. Siddhartha the father went after him, but when he arrived to the garden where Kamala used to live, he realized that he had to let him go and keep following his path.
Siddhartha's life went on longer than I expected it would with Kamala and Kamaswami. He ultimately gave into temptations and became an average greed-led merchant. Only after feeling himself dieing and the dreams, such as one with the bird, did he realize he needed to change his ways quickly. After going to the river, he killed his new self and revived his old self. He found many answers while living from a sinful lifestyle during meditation. After conversing with Govidna, his rejuvenated senses led him to the ferryman, Vasudeva, and living with him and the river gave him much help. Kamala found Siddhartha while word sent out that the holy Gotama was about to die. In a twist of events, Kamala brought Siddhartha his son but died to the poison of a snake. Vasudeva wisely told Siddhartha to ask the river for advice with dealing with his son. They allowed him to run away which I thought was not the best choice.
Siddartha feels dead as he feels he still has not found true happiness as a man. He recalls it as a youth or child but not as a man. Kamala becomes pregnant however Siddartha walked away from her prior to knowing this. I was dissappointed he didn't try to work it out with her as I felt there was more to their relationship and something worth holding onto. Siddartha is reunited with Govinda. Govinda didn't recognize him with the nice clothes and aged. The ferryman tells Siddartha to listen to the river. Kamala and the little boy are walking along the river getting restless after going to say goodbye to Budda. Kamala ends up dieing as she is bit by a snake. Siddartha ends up raising the son they had. He now feels he found true love. The boy and him do not bond as the boy is use to growing up with nice clothes and being rich. The son acts very disrespectful. The ferryman and Siddartha don't discuss how the boy has left again and continue there days being the ferryman. Siddartha seems hurt and cold with the loss of his son not being around him. I think he is wishing he would have stayed with his mother Kamala as things would have been so different.
