Modern Poetry

Respond to any of the poems that we read for today . . .

  1. The modern poems were less cryptic to me than the classical poems from yesterday. I understood most of what they were saying and the poem "If You Forget Me" by Pablo Neruda was particularly interesting. The poem to me signifies love means nothing if one person stops loving the other. Still, I am not sure if it is justified if the writer is actually making these warnings and accusations. It seems to me, the "love" was never really love to begin with but instead left with doubt and suspicion.

  2. What I liked about these poems is that they were easier to read. I understood what the author was saying and what they were trying to get across. The poem that I liked was "I know why the caged bird sings" by Maya Angelou. The reason that I liked it is because it made me think about my bird Rocky. It made me feel sorry for him that he is in his cage and honestly I had never seen it in that lens.

  3. I enjoyed the poem "I too Sing America" I felt that it went along with our reading "Everything That Rises Must Converge" You can feel similar attitudes from the time. In "America" it was interesting going through the analysis we did today. I find it to often that when reading such things I just read and don't really think about the deeper meaning of the words. It was great to work with the others in the class and hear the different perspectives on what the poem was saying. It was also great to see how similar our thoughts were in some cases.

  4. The modern poems were alot easier to follow and understand. The poem I enjoyed the most was If You Forget Me. I felt it was deep and about love. I felt it was getting at one person loving someone where the other did not or maybe not as much. This happens in life all too often. It made me think of my ex marriage where I gave all and he gave nothing. It was easy for me to relate to this poem in my past experiences.

  5. Modern poetry is different from classical poetry in that it does not have any rules and categories and thus it may borrow ideas from classics. Generally there is more focus on visual and sound aspects in this kind of poetry.Modern poetry, also known as contemporary poetry, is a piece or body of work written after the 1920's. It is created to evoke an artistic feeling or vision and is slowly finding its.
