Brave New World Part 2

Chapters 5-8

  1. Chapters 5 through 8 were particularly interesting. The day celebrates Ford and Bernard feels it is all a sham as people around him supposedly hear his voice. After singing and pretending with the crowds, Bernard tries to talk about his feelings with Lenina. To no avail, Lenina is more cultured in society and think Bernard is just drunk or crazy.

As Bernard delivers a letter to the director, the director reveals a story that made me think he secretly felt emotions as well. Bernard felt proud having given a threat by the director for hearing his story, and he felt important. Unfortunately, he did not take the threat seriously and was going to be sent to Iceland. Still, Bernard took Lenina with him to the Savage Reserve where Indians still live in families. They saw horrors inside the village but learned very much from a intelligent woman named Linda.

  2. The part of this section that I found most interesting was the director sharing his "emotions/regrets" with Bernard. Then to find out that Bernard ends up finding the directors "missing woman" was a twist I was not expecting. Then to find out that the woman actually had the director's child made me want to keep reading to see where this ended up going. Unfortunately I ran out of time to see what the next chapters would bring. I think that by bringing Linda back to London that Bernard is going to open up a whole "New World" again and it will be exciting to see how the others will react to her arrival back in England.

  3. In these four chapters we get a better look into the lives of Bernard and Lenina. I got a sense from Lenina that she wants and feels that there is something else to life, but she is too scared to move beyond her comfort zone. At ,times she seems like a robot just repeating the mantras that she learned over and over. Bernard seems to notice this as well because he mentions it. Bernard wants something deeper with Lenina, but he realizes that she only sees herself as others do and Bernard refers to her as a piece of meat.

We also get to meet John and his mother. John is the son of the Director, but the Director doesn't know this. So Bernard schemes a plan to bring Johan and his mother back to London. He knows that if he does this than it probably will stop the Director from sending him to Iceland.

  4. These chapters brought on an interesting level to the book in which I didn't expect it to turn to this so quickly. We now get to learn more about Bernard as well as Lenina. Bernard acts as if he has stronger feelings for Lenina but treats her as if he doesn't and that she is just any girl that he can get a piece from. Also introduces us to John. The director receives a letter.
