As the story continues the "Brave New World" starts to unravel for Lenina, John, Helmholtz, and Bernard. Lenina finally gets the courage, with the help of some soma, to approach John. Only to find even though he loves her he does not want to be with him sexually until he has done something for her. He wants to be with her but only after they are "committed" to each other.
Then when John does tell Lenina how he feels she throws herself at him and he calls her a whore. The reading that he has done does not allow him to be with her. Then he gets the call that he mother is dying. When she dies and the children demean her death he loses control.
When Bernard and Helmholtz come to help John they get caught up in the riot and are taken to the controller's office. There Bernard and Helmholtz are being sent to an island. The controller confesses to John that he once was in danger of being sent to an island but chose to be a controller instead. He also confessed to reading some of the old writings himself.
It looked like there was some danger of the society going back to the way it used to be. Lenina made a mistake and one of the embryos she was caring for died years later due to her neglect. I also thought that John might really have a chance at starting some sort of revolt but that was quickly shut down.
As the story comes to an end I think that there may be some small changes to society but most likely I think that John will either comply with his new surroundings or he will end up back on the reservation.
In this part of the reading Lenina decides to take action and goes to John's apartment. Once there, John confesses his love to Lenina and it terrifies her. She then tries to seduce him by kissing him and getting naked. John freaks out and calls her a whore and even slaps her once.
He then receives a call, and they inform him that his mother Linda is dying. When he visits her, she only seems to remember Pope and that maddens John. So he shakes her and that causes Linda's death. He then leaves the hospital.
Outside he finds a group of people in line to get their soma portion and he goes wild and starts throwing the some away. The people start fighting John and that's when Bernard and Helmholtz arrive. Helmholtz joins the fight, but Bernard is too scared. Officers than come and spray people with soma gas.
John, Helmholtz, and Bernard are taken to the controllers office. There they find out that the controller once was almost sent to an island and then the controller informs them that Bernard and Helmholtz are going to be taken to an island.
Nearing the end of Brave New World, Lenina tries to advance on John, but his Indian-taught values tells him he has to prove himself. Due to the community society, John finds it appalling that Lenina is so open to sex. John denounces her as a whore and is truly shocked at the soma-driven civilization.
Getting a call from the hospital, John rushes to his mother, Linda. John was given little privacy as he mourned for the death of his mother. No one could comprehend the sorrow he had for her loss.
Leaving the hospital, John felt a horrible rage. He fully understood the horrors of this society. John tried to throw away packets of soma as to free the khaki-classed people. Helmholtz and Bernard arrive to help along with the police close behind.
Now at the World Controller's office, John and Helmholtz exchange a very individualistic conversation with Mustapha. Bernard feels he doesn't deserve the punishment of being sent to an island and points the blame towards his friends. Mutsapha continues to give John and Helmholtz his background and how he is very similar to them but cannot let them stay in society. The plot so far has been very interesting and it will be exciting what happens in the end.
